Insurance

Congratulations!! You took a pregnancy test and it came out positive. Then you scheduled a consult and tour at our birth center. And while you visited us, we put together an estimate for your insurance coverage. Most people really don't understand how their insurance plans actually work. I mean, they understand that they have insurance but they often don't understand why they have to pay anything out of pocket or a how we come up with the estimate, so we thought we would help break this down for you.  But first: there are different ways people obtain insurance plans. Some employers include insurance plans are a benefit to working with their company. Employers will contract with different insurance companies and each employer might offer different plans to different employees, so just because you have Cigna, as an example, it doesn't mean all Cigna plans are the same. Also, some people purchase their own insurance plans directly from insurance companies or from the Marketpla...

09/10/10: News! Misti passed her state exam!

Great news everyone! Misti (our midwife intern who has been with us for almost 2 years) graduated from midwifery school last month and has taken her state boards. She got the phone call on Friday letting her know that she has passed her state boards and can now apply for her license and obtain her medical malpractice insurance and begin to see clients! Misti plans on setting up her private practice in the St. Augustine area where she lives but will still 'float' with us for a while. We are happy for her and wish her well in all of her endeavors. It has been an honor to have helped shape her into the midwife she is becoming!

New VBAC guidelines

Hello everyone, hope you are having a wonderful sunny weekend! I had planned on going out in our boat down the river, but the blind Mosquitos are swarming, so it is just going to be a relaxing at home weekend for me. A few news items have come across the wire in the last 24 hours that I wanted to share with you all. One is about VBAC safety. Any of our clients who have experienced a cesarean will want to follow this topic closely. ACOG has announced that they are revising their VBAC policy guidelines: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38349267/ns/health/ Sorry if you have to cut and paste, I am just learning how to blog on my iPhone!! ~Michelle Gawne, LM CPM~ Heart 2 Heart Birth Center Location: Dirksen Dr,De Bary,United States

Misti is having twins!!!

For those of you who did not know it yet, our Birth Assistant Misti Balzer (senior student midwife) is having TWINS! We are all very excited for her and know that her family is really going to have a blast with two new little girls! Misti currently attends Florida School of Traditional Midwifery in Gainesville, lives in St. Augustine, and works here at H2H as a birth attendant...she really gets around! HeeHeee! As you can tell, she is very dedicated to becoming a midwife! Please remember that to support midwifery, everyone we know needs to join the Florida Friends of Midwives to keep your right to have a baby with a midwife legal in FLorida!

Announcing Home Birth!!

Just an FYI to any followers on here: we will now be offering homebirth! My heart soared the other day when Kaleen said she wa gonna need an oxygen tank and a travel bag...I have been doing some select homebirths, but didn't really know that she wanted to do them as well! For those of you who don't know, both Kaleen adn I had babies at home. I had my first in a birth center and my second at home. Kaleen had her first in a hospital and her next two at home! And over 9 pounds at that! Most dads prefer birth center for a few reasons: we are near the hospital in the case of an emergency, we do the clean up after the birth and you go home to your clean house afterwards so he doesn't have to clean up the sheets, and moms usually just really like the tubs here. I have heard from moms who have several children that coming to the center was better for them because it is quieter here than at home. But now we will be able to accomodate your birth wishes!! Yeah!! Now join the Florida F...

Introducing the new midwife!

Hello all! Time to get active with this blog thing, so I cam going to try to get all of you to sign up for it so you get my instant messages! For those of you out there listening, we have a new midwife here at H2H...please join us in welcoming Kaleen Richards, CNM.  Check out the website staff page and read her bio to learn more about Kaleen. She is a sweetheart (otherwise we would not have brought her in on our team) and you guys are all going to love her as much as we do. Along with being a midwife, she is also an ARNP, which means she can actually see you for sick visits as well as routine prenatal care (meaning she can also prescribe medications if you are sick, so no more doctor visits). She had homebirths with her last 2 sons, and has been looking for a way to give more natural birth care than she was able to in a hospital setting. So come out and meet the new kid on the block! And don't worry, I am still here plugging away, I am just needing some extra hands!! It is really g...
