Insurance

Congratulations!! You took a pregnancy test and it came out positive. Then you scheduled a consult and tour at our birth center. And while you visited us, we put together an estimate for your insurance coverage. Most people really don't understand how their insurance plans actually work. I mean, they understand that they have insurance but they often don't understand why they have to pay anything out of pocket or a how we come up with the estimate, so we thought we would help break this down for you.  But first: there are different ways people obtain insurance plans. Some employers include insurance plans are a benefit to working with their company. Employers will contract with different insurance companies and each employer might offer different plans to different employees, so just because you have Cigna, as an example, it doesn't mean all Cigna plans are the same. Also, some people purchase their own insurance plans directly from insurance companies or from the Marketpla

I forgot to post how we managed to deliver 3 babies peacefully in 24 hours!  It all went so smoothly, I don't know quite what to say. Our first lady came in and was 3-4 centimeters, and within a few hours was complete. In the mean time, another called with her water broken and was on her way in but believe it or not had a car problem. Her cousin picked them up and brought tem, but when she got there I couldn't really tell if she was in labor or not...her contractions had decreased and her water was definitely not broken. I let her sleep a few hours upstairs while debating her labor. After a 2 hour nap, her contractions picked up. We had already delivered the baby downstairs, done newborn exam and mom down there was relaxing and eating. So back upstairs to deliver. That baby wasn't born until about 3am. Mom and baby downstairs were going home when the next mom called and her water was REALLY broken, gushing!! She came in and had a wonderful doula with her (you will all meet

Water-Birthday

Friday night I went home pretty tired from a long day (three births in 24 hours; more on that in a minute). I slept a few hours, and then Kaleen called. She was at the center with a couple and they were just about ready to push...did I want to come down? Heck Yeah!! I might be a primary midwife but I love just watching as well! So I get there (only maybe three minutes before the birth) and it was picture perfect...dad is in tub behind mom holding her, baby sounds great, she is pushing well. And Bloop...baby pops out. They stayed in the water probably 20 minutes just running water over baby and relaxing. It was so perfect. I just want to say that just because we see birth alot, doesn't meant that each one isn't incredible to us. It is. Each one of them!! Happy Water-Birthday to Benjamin Paul!

Now on Facebook/volunteering

Hello ladies, our blog is now linked with facebook and we are working on our ranking score so other people can find us and follow the work at H2H as well. Thanks for all of yor support my dear friends!  We are occassionally asked about volunteering at the birth center. Yes, it is needed. But it often isn't int he area that many are really thinking. In order to keep us running smoothly and giving our patients the extra touches that we love to do we do need help. There are often clerical things going on in the background that hold us up and that is really the stuff that we need help with: copying, making postpartum packages, ironing on the decals for the newborn tee shirts, CLEANING!!  We love the help we get but we do hate to ask for it (just like any other woman, we like to feel like we can maintain on our own...the difference is we still have to go home and clean our own homes as well). There are other things that need work... record keeping for the breastfeeding group. I want to

Above Rubies

My husband's Auntie passed away a few weeks ago. Bernice was gentle and sweet and one of the words that described her best was mentioned at her memorial service: noble. It reminded me of a bible passage that reminded me of her and so many other women like her. Proverbs 31:10-31 A wife of noble character, who can find her? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, allthe days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds her distaff and grasps the spindle with her

Hello All!

Just an update on the new building: we have block! I will be updating with each new stage now and will try to figure out how to get these pictures up.  The new birth center will have 3 birth rooms, 2 exam rooms, a large waiting room and kitchen area, and office areas for me and Kaleen, Karin & Becca! Yeah, we will have some separate space!! Our areas are actually joined be windows so we can all talk though...we are a close knit group! The master bedroom features french doors that lead out to a private lanai. We are planning to plant beautiful night blooming fragrant flowers out here such as Confederate Jasmine and Moonflower and maybe some honeysuckle. There will be an awning out there with comfy patio furniture so you can sit outside or wander out and around in labor. The tub in the private bathroom is the big corner type that actually has a reclining area and a seat in it. This bedroom will also have a canopy bed in it with bedding reminiscent of a bed and breakfast in South Caro
