Insurance

Congratulations!! You took a pregnancy test and it came out positive. Then you scheduled a consult and tour at our birth center. And while you visited us, we put together an estimate for your insurance coverage. Most people really don't understand how their insurance plans actually work. I mean, they understand that they have insurance but they often don't understand why they have to pay anything out of pocket or a how we come up with the estimate, so we thought we would help break this down for you.  But first: there are different ways people obtain insurance plans. Some employers include insurance plans are a benefit to working with their company. Employers will contract with different insurance companies and each employer might offer different plans to different employees, so just because you have Cigna, as an example, it doesn't mean all Cigna plans are the same. Also, some people purchase their own insurance plans directly from insurance companies or from the Marketpla

12/07/09: Birth of Baby Pierce

I received a phone call from a (frantic) mom saying her daughter (our patient) is having contractions about 10 minutes apart, but she is might want to go to the hospital instead of coming to the birth center. I said to come in and let us see what is going on...sure enough, she is in early/active labor. She decided to stay, but was worried she would need to go to hospital. her labor progressed pretty fast for the mild contractions she was having, and any time I checked her there was progress. the last time I checked her, she was complete and ready to push!! A few pushes and she had a baby in her arms! She never made a peep...didn't scream out, didn't even whimper!! Much thanks to Karen Bell, CLC for coming right over and giving Asia some wonderful breastfeeding instruction. And Asia, remember this: you can do anything that you put your mind to! You did it girl!! I was so proud of you for not quitting!! Pictures to come!

12/06/09: Jennifer and Danny's Birth

This was an interesting birth! Not that every birth is not interesting, but this one was neat in the way that Jennifer had her acupuncture doctor come to treat her during her labor. Crystal, our acupuncturist attends a lot of our births and so this is not the interesting part, it was just how fast the acupressure that she received worked on her to increase her contractions (which were weak when she arrived). Within a few minutes of some treatment, her contraction pattern was really moving along and we had a very smooth and uneventful labor and a pretty swift pushing stage. She bled a bit heavier than we like, but with (again) acupuncture and some other meds her bleeding was quickly in control. Her husband is very much in love with their baby and he was so very helpful to her in labor. It was a sweet birth and I met some new friends! Pictures of Jennifer's new daughter to come!

12/04/09: Tiffany's Birth

Tiffany was overdue by almost a solid two weeks. She had already had some additional testing to make sure baby was doing well, but we were almost at the end of our time that we are allotted to let a patient go overdue (2 weeks). She was actually scheduled for an induction the next morning at the hospital. Lo and behold, she called in active labor! Praise God! She came in and had a beautiful labor, not long, and she says it was her easiest! Congratulations Tiffany and Kevin and family on the birth of baby girl Grace. Pictures to come.

12/08/09: New Building Update

Hello all, quick update on the building and the move: the final inspection is scheduled for tomorrow for the certificate of occupancy. I don't see how it will happen...but I am a bit skeptical at this point. the sink cabinets are in but I think there was a plumbing issue. the cabinets had not been delivered as of today, which means countertops couldn't be installed. If the inspection is not passed tomorrow I think we will be behind another full week. I am trying to not be too disappointed but it is hard being all packed up and disorganized when we are used to running a pretty tight ship. And the not knowing is the frustrating part. If I just had someone saying " Michelle, it will not be until after Jan 1" I would be okay. Ah well. With all the confusion I forgot to blog in two births. I will do them as separate entries though. I will update everyone tomorrow with the inspection results and the final move date.

NEARLY DELIVERED IN CAR IN PARKING LOT!

We had quite the exciting morning! Katie was in yesterday and I stripped her membranes good to "help" a little. She called me later that night with uterine irritability but then nothing until 0630 this am. Her water broke and now they were every 2-3 minutes and she had an hour drive from the East Coast! We were ready and waiting when I decided to call her to check on her and Joe answered saying they were 2 minutes out and the baby was coming. We waited in the parking lot and sure enough Katie was sitting on one butt check and the head was nearly crowning! We managed to get her into the bedroom and Dominic was born just minutes later....all 9lbs 6oz of him! Baby and mommy are wonderful and big sis is sooo excited. Congrats Katie, Joe, and Kirsten!
