Insurance

Congratulations!! You took a pregnancy test and it came out positive. Then you scheduled a consult and tour at our birth center. And while you visited us, we put together an estimate for your insurance coverage. Most people really don't understand how their insurance plans actually work. I mean, they understand that they have insurance but they often don't understand why they have to pay anything out of pocket or a how we come up with the estimate, so we thought we would help break this down for you.  But first: there are different ways people obtain insurance plans. Some employers include insurance plans are a benefit to working with their company. Employers will contract with different insurance companies and each employer might offer different plans to different employees, so just because you have Cigna, as an example, it doesn't mean all Cigna plans are the same. Also, some people purchase their own insurance plans directly from insurance companies or from the Marketpla

Dresden's Birth

Image
Finally! The long awaited for birth of Mr. Dresden! Amanda suffered many months with preterm labor issues...she seems to have a very irritable uterus. Our concern throughout the pregnancy was just in keeping Dresden in long enough, and lo and behold, here it is and his due date comes and goes. On another day I will tell you all what I think about due dates :) At any rate, here he is, and he is a beauty, weighing in at 8.0 yet! Thank you Amanda and Matt for having some patience and sticking it out to have your baby at the birth center instead of going to the hospital!

Transfers

Today, a beautiful young lady came in to the birth center in the early stages of labor. She did not progress and this baby did not move down to help out...after several hours with no progress she asked for pain medication. In this case, I agreed completely. Watching her struggle made me grateful for pain medication for some people...obviously I do not believe that everyone should use pain medication for every birth (duh) but in some cases, it is very well indicated. I am hoping that she has a vaginal birth, but we never know what will happen when we send them in to the hospital or if the medication will be able to smooth the way so a woman can progess without fighting her body so violently. All I know is that no matter what we said to her, how we tried to comfort her, stroked her back or held her hand, none of us could make it any easier for this one. My prayer today is for her and any one else like her out there fighting through labor and not getting anywhere and struggling with feeli

Christmas Shopping

Not done yet, people...your midwife is a procrastinator and now the stores are packed and it is a bit daunting. People are rude and harried and maybe a tad desperate. My thought is that they have forgotten what the holiday is about. Should we not focus (as if this has not been said before...) on the beauty and miracle of Christ's work?  I am going to play Secret Santa this year. I am going to pick a family to give a gift to anonomously (sp?) and leave it on their doorstep and run. Hope they don't freak out and call the cops or something! We have no little children at our home anymore and not likely to have any for quite some time according to my daughter-in-laws, so I will focus my efforts on some other kiddos for a bit!  BTW, I only have my DH left to shop for and anyone knowing him knows that he is impossible to shop for. Only wants car parts and they are rare (not available at DAP).  Oh, Lynn and I went to a fantastic Christmas party last night with a Muppet theme! They had

Florida Friends of Midwives Meeting

Image
Greetings all, been a while since I posted, so forgive me. There has been a lot going on and the only way you will all get to know about it is by reading it on here and I have fallen down on that job! My other job sometimes gets in the way!! We had a FFOM meeting the other day here at the Center. There is a big push going on in the US to ban midwifery and take away your rights to choose your type of healthcare provider as well as birth setting (meaning homebirth or birth center) and make it so that you can only have an OBGYN deliver your baby in a hospital setting. The Florida Midwives are gathering to hire a lobbyist to help us keep track of what is going on up in Tallahassee at the legistlative meetings. The Florida Statute Chapter 467 (the midwifery laws) are open to sunset review this next year and this is why we all need to get proactive!! We need you help to make sure that the State Representatives all know that you (as a registered voter) want to protect your right to a midwife.
